Terms of service
Effective October 9, 2026
These are the terms for using Rumpus Reading, the website at rumpusreading.com and the app at app.rumpusreading.com, made by Compounding Knowledge Company ("we"). By creating an account you agree to them and to our privacy policy. They are written to be read, so they are short. If something is unclear, write to us.
The beta
Rumpus is in a beta: it is free, it is offered to a limited number of families, and it is still being built. Features will change, and some days a lesson or a story will not be as good as it should be. We may change, pause, or end the beta. If we end it, we will give you 30 days' notice by email, and your account and its data will be deleted as the privacy policy describes.
Your account
- You must be at least 18 and the parent or legal guardian of every child you add. You are agreeing to these terms and the privacy policy for yourself and on behalf of your child.
- One account per parent. You may add more than one child to it.
- Keep your password to yourself. Everything done under your account is your responsibility. If you think someone else has used it, change the password and tell us.
- Give us a real email address. It is how we confirm it is you, send a password reset, and reach you about your account.
Using Rumpus with your child
Rumpus is a tool for a parent who sits beside a child for a few minutes a day. It is not a school, a tutor, or an assessment, and it does not replace any of them. We do not promise that a child will read by any date or reach any level. Children differ, and the parent beside them matters more than any app. If you are worried about your child's reading, talk to their teacher or a reading specialist.
Run the sessions yourself. Rumpus is not designed for a child to use alone, and the lessons assume you are there to say the sounds and read the parent's lines.
The lessons and the stories
The lessons are our own original material, created to align with the UFLI Foundations scope and sequence. They were not created by, and are not endorsed by, the University of Florida Literacy Institute.
Each story is written on the spot by an AI model, inside rules we set, and checked by our software before it is shown. The check is good, not perfect: a story can still contain an odd sentence or a word that does not belong. If one does, flag it in the app and we will look at it. Stories are made for your child to read with you once; they are not a published work and you should not rely on them for anything else.
What is ours and what is yours
Rumpus, its software, its lessons, its design, and its name belong to Compounding Knowledge Company. You may use them for your own family and for no other purpose. You may not copy, sell, rent, or redistribute the lessons or the stories, build another product from them, scrape the app, or try to get around its limits or its security.
Your child's reading record is yours. You can see it in the app and delete it at any time. You give us only the permission we need to store and process it to run Rumpus for you, as the privacy policy describes, and nothing more.
Payment
Nothing is charged during the beta. If Rumpus becomes paid, we will post the price, email you, and ask you to agree before anything is charged. Any offer we have published for founding families will be honored on the terms it was published with.
Ending
You can leave at any time with Delete my account on the Account screen. We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, that is used by someone who is not a child's parent or guardian, or that is used to attack the service, and we will tell you why unless the law prevents it.
Our responsibility to you
During the beta Rumpus is provided as it is, without a promise that it will be available at every moment or free of mistakes. To the extent California law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, and our total liability to you for anything arising from Rumpus is limited to the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim, which during the beta is nothing. Nothing in these terms limits a liability the law does not let us limit.
Changes to these terms
If we change these terms we will post the new version here with a new effective date, and email you if the change matters to you. Using Rumpus after the date means you accept the new terms. If you do not, delete your account before then.
The law that applies
These terms are governed by the laws of California. Any dispute will be heard in the state or federal courts in Los Angeles County, California, except that either of us may use small claims court where it applies. Before going to court, please write to us; most problems can be fixed by email.
